News from “Miria”

20th May 2011

Jasi, our correspondent in Lviv and a social worker working with the children sent us some news.

She always intervenes on Tuesdays with other Ukrainian students: Sacha, Marichka, Max and a new recruit: Oksana! Good news, the children are going to be even busier! She really feels the bond is getting stronger between them and the children who trust them more and more. Friendships among students who did not know each other also seem to be deepening, which is a good thing for the team spirit and for the relationships with the young ones.

In April, the works of the children were displayed in the orphanage but they would like to find another location where they would be better showcased.

Jasi had planned an outing with the children at the Shevchenko Museum, but in the end she did not get the authorization to go out with the children! She was disappointed but it is true that it takes time to create a relationship of trust with the orphanage managers!

Jasi also told us about a 14-year old boy, Vladik, who waits for them every Tuesday behind the front door and who follows them in each class, he has become very attached to them.

The children did receive the mail from the Saint Joseph School of Montmerle-sur-Saône in France which we had had previously translated by Olga. They will now be able to respond!

Finally, for Palm Sunday, the social workers came to the orphanage with Father Roman, a Greek Catholic priest who has been working at Miria for a short while and who loves the team. Then, they went to visit an exhibition of sacred art in the city with the children. This time, they were able to get out and enjoy a bit of freedom! Thank you Jasi and the entire team for everything you do for the children…

How can you help us?

Ukrainian orphans and orphanages need you! Each donation contributes to the development and happiness of the children.

Here are our current projects:

1. Funding of educational activities for the year 2011-2012 at the “Miria”institution in Lviv, Ukraine

Each social worker in the orphanage is paid €5 per hour. He/she does a 3-hour intervention each week, which adds up to €15 per week.

Therefore, for the whole school year in an orphanage, a 3-hour weekly intervention with 3 groups led by one social worker each, costs around €2 000.

Not to mention the equipment’s costs that we have estimated at €2,000 for one school year.

Supporting an annual activity in a Ukrainian orphanage therefore comes to €4,000.

2. Funding and launching of educational activities for the year 2011-2012 in a second orphanage

If we consider that costs are equivalent to those of the “Miria” Institution in which we already intervene, the association needs €4 000 to fund another centre.

To make your donation:

Cheque payable to Association Enfants d’Ukraine:

Association Enfants d’Ukraine-c/o Mme Chancerelle-39 rue de la Pierre - 44220 Couëron

Previously funded projects:

•Daria’s medical treatments: Daria Z. is a seriously sick girl. She was born on 10th February 1995 and lives in Kiev. Doctors have diagnosed a myeloid leukemia. On 26th November last year, she was hospitalisedat the Central Department of radical chemotherapy in the Pediatric Oncology/Hematology and bone marrow transplantation Institute. To continue her treatments, she needs to be hospitalisedagain and significant financial resources were needed. We offered the Fondation La Boissiere-Thiennes (based in Belgium) to fund Daria’s treatments. The Foundation found the young girl’s case very moving and has agreed to make a donation for her next hospitalisation. As a result, €3,000 have been sent to Ukraine to contribute to the costs incurred to save Daria.

•Donation to the Vorzel orphanage: the Graine de Vie association (located in the North of France) has indeed awarded the sum of €700 for an orphanage located a few kilometres from Kiev. One of our contacts in Ukraine, Denis. K., has organised the purchase and distribution of essential goods for the orphanage.

•Funding of occupational activities (social workers + equipment) within the “Miria”institution in Lviv: from 3pm to 6pm every Tuesday, 35 children divided into 3 groups (between 8 and 12 years old) take part in an arts workshop. Three social workers studying at the Lviv art school get paid to run those workshops. The association provides the social workers with a budget allowing for the purchase of necessary equipment to carry out the interventions.

BIRTH

The association Enfants d’Ukraine (Children of Ukraine) was born on 30th December 2009. We are pleased to introduce it to you today.

This humanitarian association aims to cooperate with Ukrainian orphanages by helping them to organise activities for children (music, drawing, painting, modeling, crafts, sports, reading stories...). The objective is to fund a social worker and the equipment he/she might need to organise those occupational activities with the children.

Why funding those activities? Ukrainian orphanages do not offer many activities to the children, they can’t afford them. The consequences are dramatic as children accrue significant psychomotor delays. In most cases they are able to make up for them if they are adopted. Most of them have never done any drawing, listened to a story, or even heard music. These children are not stimulated by games and activities of their age. They spend a lot of time doing nothing.

Our project is to offer them access to these activities within the orphanage. Furthermore, for special requests, we would also like to help some orphanages with more basic needs (purchase of equipment, clothes…).

Launch of our association

Dear families, dear friends,

Upon consideration, we could not stay without doing anything for the Ukraine orphanages who have entrusted us with our children and given us the great joy of being parents.

We have decided to help those orphanages through an association that we have just set up: Enfants d’Ukraine (Children of Ukraine).

This association aims to cooperate with Ukrainian orphanages by helping them to organise activities for thechildren (music, drawing, painting, modelling, crafts, sports, reading stories...). The objective is to fund a social worker and the equipment he/she might need to organise those occupational activities with the children.

The association has made its first steps: we have already received our first donation for an orphanage which accommodates a few children with heavy psychomotor disorders.

We need you so that we can carry on: your contacts and your thoughts, whichever they may be, will all carry forward our project, and are our only way to see it succeed.

Furthermore, without a minimum contribution, no action may be considered and we won’t be able to gain the trust of the partners with whom we wish to undertake those actions.

Associate creators

Anne-Elisabeth: President. 29 years old, housewife and mother since August 2009 of a little boy adopted in Ukraine. Armelle: Treasurer. 33 years old, housewife and mother of a little girl adopted in Ukraine in May 2007 and a little boy adopted in Russia in June 2009.

We both are aware of the realities of Ukraine and its orphanages where many children live and grow. After having gone there to find our children, we wish to help those who have remained there by providing assistance to the people who look after them in their country. We are aware of the financial difficulties that exist in orphanages, not always allowing them to organise occupational activities with the children. There’s also a lack of staff to keep the children occupied. We have therefore chosen to put some people forward to some Ukrainian orphanages, who would intervene to stimulate the children.
